Almost at the same time, bitcoins and cryptocurrencies were gaining a lot of attention. He decided to take the joke a step further and bought the domain <a href=\"https:\/\/dogecoin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dogecoin.com<\/a> and left a note on the site: If you want to make <a href=\"https:\/\/zebpay.com\/in\/buy-doge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dogecoin<\/a> a reality, get in touch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side of the world, Billy Markus, another engineer working with IBM, saw the note on the site and got in touch with Palmer. Markus was already working on Bells, which he called a \u2018cryptocurrency for the sillies\u2019. Unlike Bitcoin, the rewards on mining Bells were completely random.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Palmer and Markus then collaborated to create DOGE, and the rest is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-rise-of-dogecoin-s-popularity\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Rise_of_Dogecoins_Popularity\"><\/span>The Rise of Dogecoin\u2019s Popularity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/zebpay.com\/in\/buy-doge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DOGE<\/a> was first used by Reddiors as an alternative to upvoting a post. If a user posted something like, &#8220;Hey &#8216;Dogebot&#8217; tip this Redditor seventeen Dogecoin,&#8221; then that Reddit user would automatically receive Dogecoins. Its popularity soared high after a tweet from the <a href=\"https:\/\/zebpay.com\/blog\/why-we-need-defi-the-r-wallstreetbets-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chairman of WallStreetBets<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/ijzevERnHU7y8xGXEl2uNRzMUUbYjR0ILQWqn2Nr62ZPTJ4J7K5qAyke0lI-gsRpoVxcsUgTRB9qqS7vedXw7H_xg3KH3J5TyxPrm9YeKs0p2sYtXHU3rniK2ib1su4o7y1QDYTN\" alt=\"Dogecoin Post\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Right after this tweet, the cryptocurrency and Shiba Inu lovers joined together to take <em>Dogecoin to the moon<\/em>, starting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/technology\/news\/story\/dogecoin-the-meme-based-cryptocurrency-rises-by-80-per-cent-after-gamestop-frenzy-on-reddit-1763960-2021-01-29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Satoshi Street Bets<\/a> (mysterious founder, or group of people, who ideated bitcoin) who urged people to \u2018make Dogecoin a thing\u2019.&nbsp; Instantly, the valuation of DOGE spiked up by 80%. In the next 24 hours, its total market cap stood at $8.2 billion, making it the ninth-largest cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-musk-effect\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Musk_Effect\"><\/span>The Musk Effect&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrity endorsements from Elon Musk and others like Mark Cuban, rapper Lil Yachty also played a crucial part in Dogecoin\u2019s rise to stardom. Though, there was a slight dip in the momentum after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-05-10\/dogecoin-and-elon-musk-on-snl-it-s-a-hustle-but-it-s-the-people-s-hustle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Musk called Dogecoin\u2019s popularity a \u2018hustle\u2019<\/a>. However, the slumber was short-lived since Musk\u2019s SpaceX announcement again plummeted the valuation of this meme currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-last-word\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Last_Word\"><\/span>The Last Word<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While all the hype and the tweets about Dogecoin seem interesting. The important question is &#8211; is it wise to invest in DOGE or not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many crypto experts believe Bitcoin is a much safer bet in the long term.
