An Overview
In 2022, crypto emerged as a ubiquitous topic of conversation. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that referencing “crypto” in an online dating profile can attract additional attention. A recent study conducted by brokerage firm eToro provides fascinating insights into this phenomenon. According to their findings, 33% of surveyed Americans expressed a greater likelihood of going on a date with someone who mentions crypto assets in their online profile. Interestingly, among the 2,000 adult residents of the United States aged between 18 and 50 who participated in the survey, over 40% of men and 25% of women indicated a heightened interest in a potential date when crypto is mentioned in their dating profile.
Callie Cox, a U.S. investment analyst at eToro, highlighted the intriguing intersection of money, culture, and identity revealed by eToro’s inaugural “Crypto & Culture” survey. “The genesis of this campaign was to better understand how people think of big life projects and finding that perfect partner,” said Cox. One of the standout discoveries in the report was that 33% of respondents expressed openness to dating someone who mentions crypto in their profile. “This shows there is a connection between money, love, and identity when people look for a partner on a dating app,” as observed. It also found it intriguing that nearly 74% of survey participants stated they would likely go on a second date with someone who paid the first date’s bill in Bitcoin.
While these insights suggest that individuals openly embracing crypto may garner more attention on dating apps, as noted that Millennials and Gen Z respondents dominated the survey. “Everyone had to self-identify, and most of the respondents were from the younger generation,” it remarked. Additionally, the report mentioned that eToro’s findings indicate that paying a bill in Bitcoin is more appealing to men than women.
Putting aside discussions about crypto and dating, eToro’s research also revealed that 8% of participants expressed a desire to receive a non-fungible token (NFT) as a Valentine’s Day present this year. Cox remarked that this figure wasn’t surprising, given the NFT market’s recent surge, but she found it intriguing because it underscores the younger generations’ appreciation for identity-themed products. “The younger generation wants to possess items that reflect their identity, whether in the physical world or in the Metaverse, and NFTs epitomises this sentiment,” as explained.
Consequently, various identity-themed Valentine’s Day NFTs have emerged this year. For instance, MYKA, a renowned jewellery designer, has unveiled a limited-edition NFT collection featuring digital renditions of their top-selling jewellery pieces. Additionally, eToro’s study discovered that nearly 20% of single individuals would be more interested in dating someone if they used an NFT as their profile picture on a social platform or dating site.
